Janus Conservation Ltd is a specialist historic building surveying and heritage planning consultancy, with offices in Thame, Oxfordshire and Bloomsbury, London.

We deal exclusively with the historic environment, working with both commercial and private/residential clients along with major landowners such as the National Trust and Royal Household. We are both RICS Regulated and an IHBC recognised Historic Environment Service Provider.

Rupert is an accomplished historic building surveyor, construction manager and heritage consultant, and one of only a handful of practitioners in the UK to hold full conservation accreditations with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC). In addition, he is now seeking to become a full member of the Institute of Conservation (ICON) – illustrating his passion for the historic environment.

Having previously worked for a number of very well-respected companies, Rupert quickly established himself as one of the most versatile, qualified and capable conservation practitioners in the country, before founding Janus Conservation in January 2020.

He currently acts as a quinquennial inspector to numerous historic churches, including being named surveyor of the fabric to Nicholas Hawksmoor’s iconic grade I listed Christ Church, Spitalfields in 2022.

Rupert is now particularly interested in ‘retrofit’, making responsible and technically compatible improvements to the energy efficiency of historic buildings, and is a qualified Retrofit Designer for Pathway C (High-Risk Schemes) under PAS 2035.

Ruth’s fascination with the built environment blossomed early, leading her to pursue a building surveying degree at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, where she championed the idea of marrying modern advancements with time-tested building conservation practices.

After graduating in 2012, she embarked on a path that enriched her with diverse experiences, working on offshore construction projects before honing her skills in historic building conservation while working for several esteemed companies, including holding the position of Senior Building Surveyor for the National Trust.

Ruth is highly qualified being both a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) chartered and conservation accredited building surveyor, along with being fully accredited by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC)

Her dedication to the profession has been further recognised by being invited to join the RICS Conservation Steering Group and being shortlisted for the prestigious RICS Matrics Building Surveyor of the Year award in July 2023. 

Oliver Sharpin

Oliver has had an interest in history from a young age. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Portsmouth before returning to study for an MSc in Historic Building Conservation where he graduated in 2018.

Following this, he worked for a prominent surveying and historic building repair company in the north of England where he was exposed to a range of construction types including public buildings, churches and residential properties.

Oliver joined Janus Conservation in September 2020 and is now adept at undertaking a range of complex inspections of historic buildings, as well as the production of Heritage Statements & Impact Assessments.

In addition, he has recently achieved Associate Membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and is working towards full membership as he continues to develop in the field of heritage planning.

Elsa Sibley

Elsa Sibley is a passionate and driven individual with a keen interest in bridging the gap between conservation and the built environment.



Her academic background in real estate and experience as a rotational apprentice surveyor equip her with a strong foundation in property development, valuation, and management across all use types. This enables her to navigate technical aspects alongside public engagement and human considerations.

Beyond her academic and professional achievements, Elsa actively seeks opportunities to contribute to her community, through volunteering with organisations like IntoUniversity.

Elsa is currently working towards her Assoc qualifications with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Institute of Historic Building Conservation.

Claire Lambert​

With a background in practice management and finance, Claire joined the Janus team in early 2022.  She holds a Professional Certificate in Accounting plus a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a special interest in Organizational Psychology.

Claire works closely with other Janus team members in order to deliver an efficient, friendly and customer-focussed accounts service.
